Global Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies on DeFi and Crypto Exchanges

Published on

Regulators are heightening their focus on the crypto sector. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has highlighted the persistent presence of centralized elements within DeFi, advocating for regulation and warning of potential bans for non-compliant platforms. Separately, the exchange HTX, linked to Justin Sun, is reportedly rotating its on-chain wallets amid UK sanctions, illustrating the ongoing challenges in tracking digital asset flows and ensuring compliance with international rules.

Regulatory Pressure Mounts on DeFi and Crypto Exchanges

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has issued a strong warning, observing that despite the decentralized aspirations of the DeFi ecosystem, centralized elements frequently persist. The intergovernmental watchdog believes these aspects should be brought under traditional financial regulations. Furthermore, the FATF noted that most countries are failing to implement these crucial rules, cautioning that platforms which do not comply could face outright bans, underscoring a growing global push for tighter oversight.

Meanwhile, the crypto exchange HTX, associated with prominent figure Justin Sun, is reportedly engaged in practices to circumvent UK sanctions. According to TRM Labs, HTX has been 'rotating' its on-chain hot wallets across various blockchains. This sophisticated tactic makes it difficult for address-list screening tools to effectively monitor and keep pace with the movement of funds, thereby highlighting the significant challenges regulatory bodies face in enforcing sanctions and ensuring transparency within the rapidly evolving digital asset landscape.
